1982 - 1992 Nike sports posters had equivalent mini 5 x 7” “poster cards” for store display purposes. These were produced in much smaller quantities than the posters and were given 6 digit NIKE identification numbers. We present the first published checklist for these poster cards which include Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Nolan Ryan, Bo Jackson, David Robinson, Wayne Gretzky, John McEnroe, Spike Lee and many other stars of the period.

52 Nike Poster Cards New Info on 290999 3D Rice & Ronnie
We have just surpassed 1000 page views (without mine)
Now that all the initial Nike Poster card information is archived in these blogs I will be posting NEW information as it becomes available.
The news today is that Bruce "ImaPaqRat" Fisher who is probably the #1 information source when it comes to Nike posters has purchased the 3D Rice and Ronnie poster recently up for sale on EBay. He had never seen one before so he questioned the sellers and found out that they had gotten it from their son who worked at NIKE at the time. He told them that a small batch of the posters were made but never release for commercial sale because Rice-a-Roni sued them.
Since we have heard similar stories before from others in Nike, about other posters, and Bruce had never seen this specific poster before, this has credibility to us.
Thus we are officially declaring that there is no 290999 Nike poster card and this number will remain blank.
I am going back and removing this number and it will remain as a unused number in the sequence.
Again, for historic purposes, the poster is shown below.
THERE IS NO EQUIVALENT POSTER CARD !

47. Poster Cards Issued with Numbers Higher than 291015
Through the years there were a few cards that were issued with numbers higher than 291015. These appear to have been issued in 1988 through 1989. One could guess that they had a numerical error in their system and instead of fixing it and changing a lot of numbers they simply chose a non sequence number far out of the range they were currently in.
291543 Strange Thoughts ( C. Strange) 1988
Appears in the 1988 poster catalog as a type 2 poster card
Not only are these posters out of numerical sequence, these two Bo Jackson posters have the same Nike 6 digit numbers. The backs are identical. They are type 2 and appear in he 1988 poster catalog. NOTE (see below) as of Oct 2021 we have also identified them as type 4 poster cards (blog # 72)
292335 Wings (Jordan) 1989
The iconic WINGS poster was reissued several times through the years. It was first issued in 1989 per the label on the poster that sits in the Smithsonian. The only poster card we have seen for it is the type 3 card shown below.

291544 Eric Davis 1988 NO KNOWN NPC for this poster
Have not seen this poster card but here is the poster which is five feet long. The poster was issued by Nike in 1988 after Davis put up 37 HR, 100 RBI and and 80 stolen bases in 1987. Set up as a nine-frame photographic sequence, the poster depicts Davis demonstrating the perfect popup slide, going into third base at old Riverfront Stadium.
291621 Hit & Run (B. Jackson) 1988
10/2021 NOTE see blog #72 where we identify type 4 variations of these two poster cards !

49. Chronological Release of Nike Poster Cards 1982 - 1992
Two specific things have confused collectors over the years about the Nike poster cards.
(1) A lack of awareness that there were 4 different types of cards especially the Type 4 cards with no information on them
&
(2) the numerical Nike numbers vs the year of issuance which for so long has made no sense.
I think this set of blogs have pretty well explained the 4 Types and which card numbers they were issued for. But even hard core collectors will have to really read every blog to get an understanding of the chronological order of release. To try to make that simpler, lets look at the following plot.

*** As of 5/10/2022 we have filled in most of the missing Nike product numbers and corrected several date errors...Go to blogs 76 - 86 for the up to date accurate checklist and explaination of chronological release***
Nike first started selling posters to customers in 1982 and the first grouping, through 290249, were being released into early 1985.
For some reason (probably tied to Jordan and the massive contract they signed with him) they then jumped ahead and, in 1985 through early 1987, issued 850 - 869.
At this point there was a split and they followed two parallel courses Track 1 and Track 2
Track 1 goes back and picks up pre 290850 poster cards (811 - 849) and issues them from 1988 through 1990.
Track two starts issuing post 290869 poster cards in 1987 and issues numbers 870 through 1015 from 1987 through 1992.
These appear to be the facts...we do not understand the reasoning.

UPDATE
New information from a NIKE retail poster department worker during this period of time has completely revised out thinking of why the posters were numerically out of order in their chronological release. For the complete story see blog # 76
48. Michael Jordan Nike Poster Card Checklist and references
As we have mentioned, Michael Jordan has by far the most posters in the series. There are Michael Jordan poster cards of all 4 Types. They started in 1985 when he signed his deal with Nike and ran through 1992 .
For the Jordan collector a complete checklist is given below. That's 28 unique poster cards over the 1985 - 1992 time period.
Pictures of all of these poster cards can be found in the blogs dealing with those specific Nike numbers and Types.
As we have said before 850, 851 and 856 all predate the Fleer Jordan "rookie Card".
I have also discussed the Jordan poster cards here:

51. Posters / poster cards with no Nike numbers and/or catalog mentions
Only one more thing that we need to discuss. There are a group of known posters of the period that have never showed up as NPC. Some showed up in the 1988 Nike poster catalog others in the 1991 Nike Mike checklist.
In no specific order, if readers know of poster cards to match these posters, or know of Nike numbers to match these posters please let me know.
A Time to Learn - Max Lomax
shown in the 1988 catalog and given the Nike number 291284 in the 1991 Nike Mike checklist
Kids Kubs (Some Sides Never Retire)
Shown in the 1988 catalog without a Nike number
Rising Stars - Artis Gilmore

Rising Stars - Artis Gilmore
Poster from the late 1970s shown on Nike Mike 1991 posters list . No PNC is known
The Portland Tower - Sam Bowie
#1 draft pick for Portland in the 1984 draft (could have had Jordan )
Curious as to why this has never been seen as a NPC.
Bombs Away - Dan Fouts
Nike reportedly did not have the permission to use the Chargers uniforms so most of the posters were recalled and destroyed.
Kick in the Grass 1982 Tampa Bay Rowdies
Iron Man - Dave Scott (triathelon)
Before Mark Allen there was Dave Scott. Here is his poster. No poster card is known
Doomsday - Dallas Cowboys
Should have been issued ~ 1981. Why wasn't this one reprinted ?
Great Gretzky - Wayne Gretzky 1981
Even if this was first produced before the initial round of posters in 1982/83 wouldn't you think this one would have been reprinted ??
We will add more here over time.....Please send other suggestions.
