Ramon Martinez had a breakout season in 1990, when he won 20 games, struck out 18 batters in a game and was selected an All-Star, and finished second in strikeouts as well as in the Cy Young Award balloting. He won 17 games in 1991.

Larkin batted .353 in the 1990 World Series to help lead the Reds to a four-game sweep of the Oakland Athletics. In 1991 Larkin became the first shortstop ever to hit five home runs in the span of two consecutive games and earned his fourth consecutive All-Star Game selection

In 1990 Carlton Fisk Fisk broke Johnny Bench's career home run record for catchers by hitting his 328th longball  He ended his career as the all-time leader in home runs by a catcher with 351. Fisk still holds the American League record for homers by a catcher.
